Members shared a range of personal experiences around whether disease-modifying drugs are effective for people over 65, with some doctors recommending stopping treatment due to a less active immune system in older age, while others continued their medications with positive results. Several members described managing symptoms like fatigue, cognitive fog, and balance issues after stopping DMTs, while others reported staying stable on medications like Tecfidera, Kesimpta, and Copaxone well into their 70s. A recurring theme was that MS affects everyone differently, and having an open, ongoing conversation with a trusted neurologist is key to making the best personal decision.

My neurologist took me off treatment when I turned 65 as was showing no more lesions and was staying stable. He too said they are not as effective on seniors. I get along ok without them so far except the fatigue ,anxiety , cognitive issues is worse but then I am 74 now so those things happen at my age anyway. He told me that many side effects from treatment are harder on old bodies. I eat , drink whats healthy, do herbal things that help with inflammation & excercises & walk as much as I can each day. It all has helped me. I do have junk food at times but not often. You take care.

I took myself off of Copaxone & have had NO exacerbations for over 13 yrs. My MRIs also showed unremarkable changes: meaning no new lesions either. I still have balance issues, some fatigue, & intermittent sleeping issues. I take antidepressants & Lexapro for anxiety. I'm 68 years young. I consider myself lucky & blessed! Good luck to all the MS Warriors around the globe. I hope you have a pleasant day. 🦋

Thank you for your reply!! It sets my mind at ease to know your doctor said the same things mine said. I’ve been off the medication for about 3 years, I’m 73. I am having much more fatigue and balance issues and pain. But like you say that’s going to come with age. The cognitive fog bothers me more than anything though. I am also trying to follow a healthier lifestyle now too.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and healthy holidays!!

Good for you, TommyMcDonnel! Remember no two people have the same symptoms: we're all unique. Recently, I was involved in a head-on collision: broken shoulder, broken ribs, 15 stitches, terrible concussion & yet NO MS
exacerbation. Lucky & blessed I am by the grace of God. I wish the same for you and all the MS Warriors all over the world.
