I was recently diagnosed and I’m still trying to figure this out. I’ve heard alot about counseling but counseling with a MS counselor.

There are so many people affected by chronic health issues. You may have better luck finding a therapist who has plenty of general experience with health problems as opposed to one specializing in MS. Unless you live in an area with a big MS center, they might have ideas or there might be virtual therapists who can do it. For me, it was most important to find someone I felt comfortable and safe with and one who truly cared to help. There are a lot of scenarios out there of people being newly diagnosed with all kinds of awful things or having seriously ill children & loved ones. Lots of therapists can be helpful with big life transitions without necessarily a focus on experience with MS specifically. Best of luck.

Finding an MS-specific counselor can be crucial for managing the emotional and mental health challenges that come with multiple sclerosis. Here are some steps based on the knowledge base:

- Referrals from Health Care Providers: Ask your neurologist or primary care physician for recommendations. They often have connections with mental health professionals experienced in MS.
- Social Workers: Social workers can provide therapy and help with advocacy and coordinating your care. They can also offer information about MS resources.
- Support Groups: Joining MS support groups can provide recommendations from others who have found helpful counselors.
- Mental Health Professionals: Look for psychologists, therapists, or neuropsychologists who specialize in MS. Neuropsychologists, in particular, are trained to address cognitive changes in MS.
