It's important to work specifically with a neurophysical therapist rather than a general physical therapist. Neurophysical therapists have additional training to understand MS-specific challenges like motor fatigue, heat sensitivity, spasticity, ataxia, cognitive impairments, and visual issues that can impact movement and exercise tolerance. When exercising with MS, it's crucial not to overexert yourself as this can cause your body to overheat. When your core body temperature rises, MS symptoms often become more severe. Take frequent breaks during physical therapy sessions and maintain a steady, gradual pace rather than pushing too hard. Let your therapist know if you're experiencing symptom flares so they can adjust the intensity of your exercises accordingly.

I went for a free evaluation and was referred to water therapy in the pool where the therapist walked behind me because my balance was so bad. I go twice a week and after 2 weeks my land evaluation showed improvement in balance. Now I use a floating dumb bell in the pool walking by myself! I use an electric wheelchair from my car to the pool and then I hold the railing and walk into the pool fine. However, there is a chair-lift available for transfers. No excuses! Just do it - it's fun.

Hi Kimberly, have you told your therapist? Maybe they can scale back on areas you are having trouble with. I was in therapy for almost two years back in 2014 when I had a severe exacerbation of my MS that left me unable to walk without help of a walker and PT really helped me get walking again. It wasn’t fun many times but that and the medication I was on Tysabri over time helped me immensely. I think had I given up ( and at times it was tempting) I would not be walking and doing what I do today. Communication with your therapist and Dr’s is very important! Hang in there, once you strengthen your muscles slowly improve your symptoms. Stay strong!

Let me any exercise, you have to keep at it. What you say makes the symptoms worse will subside.. use it or lose it!
