Walking difficulties are one of the top three symptoms reported by people with MS. Common challenges include taking slower/shorter steps, feeling unsteady, tripping or stumbling, experiencing leg heaviness or weakness, and having trouble placing feet firmly on the ground. Walking problems can vary significantly between individuals.
Nearly two-thirds of people with MS can still walk 20 years after diagnosis, finding ways to adapt and stay active with proper support and tools. Several factors can affect walking ability in MS:
- Spasticity (muscle stiffness and involuntary spasms)
- Balance problems, which can cause unsteady gait
- Numbness in feet that affects floor sensation
- Muscle weakness in legs and feet
- Fatigue that worsens walking ability and increases fall risk
If you notice changes in your walking, talk to your healthcare provider right away. They can recommend management strategies including medication, physical therapy, exercise programs, and appropriate assistive devices to help maintain mobility.
