Both Botox and InterStim therapy can be effective options for managing bladder issues in MS. Botox injections work by relaxing the bladder muscles and typically last 3-5 months between treatments. Many people have positive experiences with bladder Botox - one MyMSTeam member shared that it "really changed my life." The treatment helps increase bladder capacity and decrease both frequency and urgency of urination. Something to consider with Botox is that a common side effect is difficulty emptying your bladder independently, which may require self-catheterization. While this might sound concerning, many people find that learning to self-catheterize is actually empowering and gives them more freedom to leave home without constantly worrying about bathroom access. The main limitation with Botox can be the cost, as multiple vials may be needed per treatment. InterStim is a surgical option that involves implanting a small device that stimulates the nerves controlling bladder movements. This can provide ongoing bladder control without the need for repeated treatments like Botox requires. Both options have helped many people with MS regain better bladder control - the choice often comes down to personal preference regarding surgery versus periodic injections.
