A C-reactive protein (CRP) test measures the level of C-reactive protein — a protein made by your liver — in your blood. Your liver releases CRP into your bloodstream in response to inflammation.

“ Yes, C-reactive protein (CRP) levels can be elevated in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), particularly during relapses. CRP is an acute-phase protein that increases in response to inflammation, and MS is an inflammatory disease. Studies have shown that… read more

Crp test just indicates inflammation in the body…anything can cause it. You can get an elevated crp test from any number of things that have nothing to do with ms- even a bug bite or vaccination can cause an elevation. Sometimes they do serial CRPs if someone is actively fighting an infection to see if elevated levels are trending down…but the test itself is not an indicator of MS and the result (even if elevated) might have nothing to do with MS.

• B12 and folate levels
• Antinuclear antibody tests
• Erythrocyte sedimentation rate
• Rheumatoid factor tests
• Blood cell counts before starting disease-modifying treatments
• Liver enzyme levels Before starting any disease-modifying treatments (DMTs), your healthcare team will typically order specific blood tests to ensure the medications are safe for you. These tests monitor things like blood cell counts and liver function, which are important for preventing complications from certain MS treatments.
