Hey Jennifer, welcome! I had both done as well before my diagnosis was confirmed. The spinal tap wasn't as bad as some folks thought. They'll give you a local in your back to numb you up. Then they actually take another syringe and withdraw a small amount of spinal fluid. They later test the fluid for certain signs of MS. MS is a difficult illness to diagnose. So they may do both sometimes just to make sure.

Yeah them actually getting into your spine is pretty much. What's next? It isn't that bad as long as they give you the right anesthesia when I had it done the first time they didn't and I kicked the doctor in the face but the second time was all numbed up crackling it didn't bother me at all

@A MyMSTeam Member , you will be OK , Make sure you are well hydrated before , and have a few days easy meals and activities planned (like movies etc) as most people need a few days bed rest to heal. A lot of people also suffer mild headaches so have some aspirin/tylenol handy

My spinal tap did not confirm MS though I had the symptoms. I did not have any MRI and DR prescribed Rebif. I did shots for a month and was told to stop.I did not switch to another DMT and 4 yrs later I had a flare up and MRI showed a lesion in brain and I started to take Tecfidera and 3 years later I had a flare up and it started to disable me like a stroke on right side of body. No success with tysabri and then Ocrevus which had to stop due to rashes and having steroid treatments. Dr stated no matter what DMT you take your PPMS will progress.switched back to Tecfidera and I am working on diet and the secret language of your body to help healing.
It’s all helping with immune system.
