How do I know when to ask for a referral to another specialist for my MS care?

When your neurologist isn't able to fully address certain MS symptoms, like chronic pain, it's appropriate to request a referral to a specialist. You can simply say "Would you please send me to someone with expertise?" There are specialists who focus specifically on different aspects of MS management. Pro tip: When seeing multiple specialists, ask each doctor to share their medical notes with your other healthcare providers. This creates what doctors call a "circle of care" - ensuring all your healthcare providers are informed about your treatment plans and can provide coordinated care.

Remember to keep copies of your medical notes to share with any new specialists you see. This helps maintain continuity in your care and ensures all your providers have complete information about your MS management.

Comprehensive ms centers often have different specialists all in one place. For instance, the mellen center (part of Cleveland Clinic) has neurologists, physical therapy, med infusions, neuropsychology, and imaging all under one roof. Also have specialists such as a doc that specializes just in spasticity. Find yourself a center like that and you can get all your needs met under one roof because they work in coordination with one another like a true team.

@Hetz2 and @A MyMSTeam Member. I think it’s very important to get referrals from your primary care doctor to see a neurologist whose specialty is ms. Not all neurologists know a great deal about ms. I hope you both have a good night & stay strong
