How do I handle disclosing my MS diagnosis at work?
The decision to disclose MS to your employer is deeply personal and comes with both risks and benefits. Your employer is required to keep your medical information confidential if disclosed to HR, and you're entitled to reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (for companies with 15+ employees).
Here are key points to consider:
• You don't have to disclose your specific diagnosis when requesting accommodations
• HR must keep medical information confidential in a separate file
• Only discuss symptoms and accommodations needed with managers
• Consider factors like job tenure and relationship with supervisor before disclosing Before having workplace discussions:
• Prepare by learning about your workplace employment policies
• Consult with your healthcare team about work accommodations
• Consider speaking with a vocational rehabilitation therapist
• Document your accommodation needs clearly
Remember that while HR must maintain confidentiality, other coworkers and supervisors are not legally required to keep your diagnosis private. This could potentially impact workplace relationships or advancement opportunities. Focus discussions on your ability to perform job duties with reasonable accommodations rather than the diagnosis itself.
