How does hormone replacement therapy (HRT) affect women with MS?

HRT may offer several benefits for women with MS going through menopause. Some women report feeling better overall when using HRT, and research suggests it might help reduce MS relapses and new brain lesions.

Studies have found that HRT can lead to:
- Better physical functioning and quality of life
- Improved bone strength, which is especially important since MS increases osteoporosis risk
- Potential relief from overlapping menopause and MS symptoms like fatigue and mood changes

One clinical trial showed that women taking estriol (a form of estrogen) alongside their disease-modifying therapy had lower relapse rates.

However, HRT isn't right for everyone. If you have risk factors for cancer or cardiovascular disease, the potential harms may outweigh the benefits. It's worth discussing with both your neurologist and gynecologist to determine if HRT is appropriate for your individual situation.
