Caffeine doesn't affect me. I drink a cup when I wake up about 1 or so and I go back to sleep.

How does caffeine affect someone with MS?

Caffeine can have both positive and negative effects on MS symptoms, depending on how much you consume and your individual sensitivity.

Potential Benefits:

- May help boost energy and reduce fatigue, which affects up to 80% of people with MS
- Can improve concentration and attention span
- May have anti-inflammatory effects on the body
- Could help fight the inflammation that causes MS symptoms

Potential Drawbacks:

- Can worsen bladder and bowel symptoms by irritating the gastrointestinal system and bladder
- May increase anxiety or cause a racing heartbeat, especially at higher doses
- Can interfere with sleep if consumed in the afternoon or evening, making fatigue worse
- Might cause stomach upset or cramping

What to Consider:

Many MyMSTeam members report insomnia, so limiting caffeine to morning hours can help protect your sleep quality. If you have anxiety, bladder issues, or sleep problems, watch your caffeine intake carefully.

Everyone responds differently to caffeine. Pay attention to how you feel after consuming it and consider discussing your caffeine intake with your healthcare provider, especially if you're thinking about changing how much you consume.
