I haven't had a flare up in several years. But as my doctor explained to me, the damage already caused is still there.
How do you know if your MS symptoms are remitting?
It's understandable to feel uncertain about whether you're in remission, especially when you're newly diagnosed. Remission happens when disease activity calms down and symptoms either ease or disappear. However, it's important to know that some people still feel very tired Show Full Answer

Not having another flare-up is “remitting.” How long some symptoms take to resolve is variable. My early bouts of optic neuritis resolved in a week or two. Treatment infusions of Solumedrol (large dose of steroid for 4 – 5 days) usually made double vision and color sensitivity get better a few days to a week faster than without treatment for me.
Some weakness in my arms and legs recovered over 3 months too a year. Everyone has their own MS. Your mileage may vary.
