Are you experiencing sudden, severe chest spasms similar to a charley horse that don't last long?

Yes, muscle spasms in the chest area can occur with MS, though they're less commonly discussed than leg or arm spasms. MS can cause painful muscle contractions throughout the body, including the trunk and chest area. These spasms happen when nerve damage disrupts normal muscle function, causing multiple muscles to contract at once.

A MyMSTeam member described their muscle spasms as feeling like "late labor pains," while others report sensations like muscles "ripping away from bones" or experiencing "electrical bolts" through their muscles. These spasms typically last from a few seconds to 15 minutes and can repeat multiple times.

Since your ER visits haven't shown cardiac issues, it's worth discussing these chest spasms specifically with your neurologist. They can help determine if these are MS-related muscle spasms and recommend appropriate treatments.

Treatment options may include:
- Muscle relaxants like baclofen or tizanidine
- Botox injections to reduce muscle tone
- Physical therapy with customized stretching exercises
- Identifying and avoiding triggers (temperature changes, stress, tight clothing, sudden movements)

Keep track of when these spasms occur and any potential triggers to share with your doctor.
