What can you do about leg weakness after riding in a car for a long time?

Prolonged sitting in a car can worsen leg weakness, which is a common MS symptom. Here are some strategies that may help:

While riding in the car:
* Try gentle ankle pumps or leg movements to keep blood flowing
* Adjust your seat position for better circulation
* Take breaks during longer trips to stand and stretch when possible

After getting out of the car:
* Give yourself extra time before walking - don't rush
* Use your walker right away for support
* Consider resting for a few minutes before attempting to walk distances

Many people with MS find that fatigue and muscle weakness increase throughout the day, especially after periods of inactivity like sitting. About 80 percent of people with MS experience fatigue, which can contribute to leg weakness. Additional helpful strategies:

Since you're already doing physical therapy, that's excellent - it can help improve strength and balance over time. Between PT sessions, pacing yourself is important.

A MyMSTeam member shared: "I have learned to pace myself. I walk a little way, stop a few minutes, then walk again."

Consider getting a disability parking placard if you don't have one already. This allows you to park closer to destinations, reducing the walking distance after your leg has weakened from the car ride.

If weakness persists or worsens, talk with your doctor about whether your current treatment plan needs adjustment.
