Do you mean Solumedrol? You can take Benadryl with it . If you feel the reaction or side effects were severe in the past discuss this with your neurologist, they can do other things if you are in a flare. You can do plasma exchange , or AcTH

Have you been prescribed high-dose methylprednisolone for an MS flare, and are you worried about side effects and the dosage?

It's completely understandable to feel anxious about steroids, especially after a difficult past experience. High-dose methylprednisolone (1000mg daily for 3-5 days) is actually the most common treatment for moderate to severe MS relapses and is considered safe when used short-term.

The 1000mg dose your doctor prescribed is standard for MS flares. While dosages can vary, it's important not to adjust the dose on your own. The goal is to reduce inflammation quickly and prevent permanent damage during a relapse.

Regarding your concern about starting with 500mg: You should discuss this directly with your prescribing doctor before making any changes. They chose this dose based on your specific symptoms and the severity of your flare. About side effects: Many people tolerate short-term steroids much better than expected. Common side effects that may occur include:

* Trouble sleeping
* Mood changes or anxiety
* Metallic taste
* Increased appetite
* Stomach upset
* Flushed face

These effects are often mild and typically go away once treatment ends. The short duration (5 days) significantly reduces the risk of serious side effects, which are more associated with long-term steroid use.

A MyMSTeam member shared: "I'm in the hospital now for a round of steroids. Three new lesions on the brain causing extreme vertigo and numbness of both arms and legs to the point where my hands curled inward β€” it was very scary."

Starting treatment quickly (ideally within a week of symptom onset) gives you the best chance of shortening the relapse and improving outcomes.
