My doctor suggested Miralax. I use it when I need to which isn't all the time.

How can you manage constipation with MS?

Constipation is a common challenge with MS, but there are several effective strategies to help manage it. The good news is that lifestyle changes often make a significant difference.

Increase Your Water Intake

Drinking enough water is one of the most important steps. Aim for at least 48 ounces (six to eight glasses) daily. Try drinking one glass with each meal and one between meals - this simple habit can substantially improve your ability to have regular bowel movements.

Add More Fiber

Fiber helps add bulk and soften stool, making it easier to pass. Good sources include:
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Whole-grain breads and cereals
- Fiber supplements if needed

Remember, fiber works best when combined with plenty of water - otherwise it can actually worsen constipation.

Stay Active

Exercise helps keep stool moving regularly through your digestive tract. Add physical activity to your routine to the extent you're comfortable.

Establish a Routine

Try training your body to empty your bowels at the same time each day. This can help create regularity. Over-the-Counter Options

If lifestyle changes aren't enough, several medications can help:
- Stool softeners like Colace
- Osmotic laxatives like Miralax or Milk of Magnesia
- Stimulant laxatives like Ex-Lax
- Glycerin or bisacodyl suppositories
- Enemas for more immediate relief

A MyMSTeam member shared: "I take stool softeners twice daily along with Miralax. Works pretty well."

Additional Tips

Some people find that using a footstool while on the toilet (creating a crouching position) makes bowel movements easier and reduces straining. You might also try a warm sitz bath or applying ice packs if you're experiencing discomfort.

Always talk to your doctor before starting new medications, even over-the-counter ones. If your MS medications are contributing to constipation, your healthcare team can help adjust your treatment plan.
