MS can cause heartburn in a couple of ways:
- Gastroparesis โ MS can slow down or impair the muscles of the stomach, causing food to build up rather than move through properly. This leads to bloating, nausea, and acid reflux.
- Vagus nerve damage โ MS can damage the vagus nerve, which sends signals from the brain to the stomach. When this nerve is affected, the stomach doesn't function as well. Spicy and fatty foods are known triggers that can make heartburn worse. Here are some things that may help manage symptoms:
- Avoid trigger foods โ spicy, fatty, or acidic foods
- Don't lie down right after eating
- Over-the-counter options โ antacids (like Tums), H2 blockers (like Pepcid), or PPIs (like Prilosec) can help
- Talk to your doctor โ they may refer you to a gastroenterologist for more tailored care
Always check with your doctor before starting any new medications or making big changes.
