Facial twitches and strange sensations around the lips are something others with MS have experienced too — so you're definitely not alone in this! These sensations can be related to how MS affects the nerves in the face.
While waiting for your neurologist appointment, here are some things that may help ease discomfort:
- Warm, moist cloths applied gently to the face can help soothe nerve-related facial sensations
- Reducing stress where possible, as stress can sometimes worsen symptoms
- Keeping a symptom diary — note when the twitching happens, how long it lasts, and any possible triggers like heat, fatigue, or stress. This will be really valuable information to share with your neurologist!
- Rest — fatigue can amplify nerve symptoms, so pacing yourself matters One MyMSTeam member described their facial sensations as: *"For two weeks, I had numbness and tingling in different parts of my face — first my right lower jaw, then the center of my face."* So the shifting, patchy nature of what you're feeling is very familiar to others.
Since these are new symptoms, do make sure to mention them to your neurologist as soon as you're seen. If the twitching becomes severe or is accompanied by sudden facial drooping or weakness, it's worth seeking prompt medical attention. ❤️
