Richard, man my heart goes out to you. This journey is hard enough, but to have been going it without treatment for 20 hrs is unimaginable. I wish I had some advice for you. But rest assured, you are in the right place to help you. Stay strong my Brother.

Have you seen an ms specialist, or neurologist? There are lots of meds to choose from, and your doctor will discuss what is best for you. If you contact the manufacturer of the medication they offer programs , some people are eligible to receive it for free , and cost plus pharmacy offers generic medication for very cheap depending on what your doctor orders

Richard have you tried contacting the MS society. They should be able to look up what programs and resources are near you (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators)....Good Luck

What treatment options are available for someone who has been living with MS untreated for nearly 20 years due to cost?

First, it's worth saying β€” navigating MS for 20 years without treatment takes real strength. The good news is that cost doesn't have to be a barrier anymore, and there are people ready to help figure this out with you.

The most important first step is connecting with an MS specialist or neurologist. They can assess where things stand and recommend the most appropriate disease-modifying treatment (DMT) for your specific situation. When it comes to affording treatment, there are more options than many people realize:

- Manufacturer assistance programs β€” many drug companies offer help directly
- MS-focused organizations β€” several nonprofits provide financial support
- Institution-based resources β€” hospitals and clinics often have access to funding programs
- Insurance navigation support β€” your MS specialist's team can often help find coverage

A MyMSTeam member shared that DMTs can be expensive, but specialists are often able to say: *"For most any patient, whether they have insurance or not, we can often find resources to fund that treatment."* Beyond medication, lifestyle changes can also play a supportive role alongside treatment, such as:

- Regular exercise
- A balanced, nutritious diet
- Stress management
- Quitting smoking if applicable

These won't replace DMTs but can complement them and help with overall wellbeing. Please don't wait β€” reach out to a neurologist and let them know about the cost concerns upfront. There is help available. πŸ’™
