Nail ridges aren't widely recognized as a direct symptom of MS, but many MyMSTeam members have noticed them after their diagnosis. One MyMSTeam member shared that their doctor said nail ridges seem common in people with autoimmune conditions like MS. Vertical ridges (running up and down the nail) can sometimes point to other things worth checking out, including:
- A nutritional deficiency in folic acid, protein, or iron
- An injury to the nail
- Rheumatoid arthritis, which people with MS may have a slightly higher risk of developing
It's a good idea to mention the ridges to your neurologist or primary care doctor. They can help figure out the cause and refer you to the right specialist if needed — whether that's a dietitian to check your nutrition or another provider to rule out other conditions.
