It could be foot drop... foot drags on floor. Neurologist will refer him to physical therapist for exercise and more. If it's footdrop check out walking device L300 GO with physical therapist.
Hip flexors are usually hit with MS. One of the most common issues with MS. Every one of my neurologist would test this when meeting. They rest their hand on your knee and instruct you to lift up. I always say that I am weak there...I wish your son well. If he is newly diagnosed (dxd) than the whole stress of it can make matters worse.
