I’ve had to throw away my underwear because of a leaky bowel. It’s disgusting and I! What can I do?

First off, know that you are absolutely not alone in this — a MyMSTeam member once said their days "revolve around the bathroom," and others have shared the same frustrations. It's okay to feel disgusted and fed up. Let's talk about what can actually help.

Neurogenic bowel dysfunction is very common with MS, affecting up to 70% of people. MS can disrupt the nerve signals between the brain and bowel, making it hard to control. The good news is there are real options. Here are some practical steps that can make a difference:

- Drink more water — aim for at least 6–8 glasses a day. Dehydration makes stool harder to control
- Eat more fiber — fruits, vegetables, and whole grains help regulate bowel movements
- Time your bathroom visits — about 20–30 minutes after a hot drink or meal, your body naturally tries to move the bowels. Use that window!
- Exercise more if you're able — movement helps get the gut moving too
- Talk to your doctor — over-the-counter and prescription medications can help manage leakage
- Ask about specialist referrals — a gastroenterologist can offer more targeted treatments
- Consider soft anal plugs — these can help manage leakage during travel or social events The most important step is bringing this up with your neurologist or healthcare team. It can feel embarrassing to discuss, but they've heard it all before and there are real solutions available. You deserve to feel comfortable and confident — not be throwing away underwear!

Hey Tracey, I do so understand! Everything the MyMSTeam states above is correct. I walk/hike 5 days a week and make sure to empty my bowels before I leave, even if I don't feel like I have to. Every morning I eat whole grain oatmeal with berries, nuts and Greek yogurt. I drink water before I have my morning coffee and stay hydrated throughout the day. My other meals contain lots of veggies, especially broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, sweet potatoes, and salads. I eat meat and fish and have cut down on regular potatoes and pasta. All of these things help me be regular and I haven't had an accident for a few years now.

Super familiar with this problem! In fact the first thing that I did was I got examined by a gastroenterologist to make sure that I didn't have anything else triggering me. he actually found that I had a slight hernia, but he was able to take care of before it became a big problem. Starting with that incident I began wearing adult depends every day. actually I mostly wear those when I am away from home, but even on days where I am at home I still wear an absorbent pad in my underwear two handle any leakage.
