Is lower back pain related to MS? It very well could be! Around 20% of people with MS experience back pain, and it can be directly linked to MS or influenced by other factors.
Here are some MS-related reasons for lower back pain:
- Muscle spasms — These are common in MS and can cause soreness in the lower back and legs
- Spasticity — Muscle tightness, one of the most common MS symptoms, can cause lower back pain
- Poor posture — MS affects balance and coordination, which can lead to posture changes that strain the lower back
- Prolonged sitting — Reduced mobility can put pressure on the lower back and tailbone area
- Falls — Up to 70% of people with MS experience falls, which can cause back injuries One MyMSTeam member described their experience: *"When I wake up, my leg muscles and body are stiff and achy. I walk bent over in the morning, but after a few hours, I walk better."*
It's really important to describe your pain to your neurologist in detail — where it hurts, what it feels like, and when it happens. Keeping a simple pain diary can help track patterns before your next appointment.

Many years ago, I had to go to the hospital due to extreme lower back pain. It came in waves. After 3 days in, turns out I had my very first MS hug.
Back pain is no joke. Stops you in your tracks. I hope you manage it well and get back on your feet soon!

Always check with your doctors first but try alternative ice and heat.
