When I was first diagnosed with MS, I was engaged and we were planning our wedding, and when you’re getting married, you’re thinking about what your future might hold. So I told my fiancée at the time that I had just been diagnosed and the implication was so, you know, think about what you're buying here. She said, “Well, that’ll be one of the things we’ll be dealing with.”

And the way she said that, it put it into context, like there will be a lot of things in our marriage, in our relationship that we’ll have to deal with, most of which we probably have no way of predicting. Multiple sclerosis is one of them, and it’s been a a collaboration, you know, ever since. I have relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, which means it gets worse and it gets better.

I think one of the hardest things about dealing with MS is the uncertainty that you have about the course of the condition, about the way the symptoms are going to present, and everyone, I think, has their way of dealing with that. In my case, being an actor, my work is uncertain. My longest job might be for a couple of months when I'm doing a show.

I’ve come to learn that my best asset is my ability to keep going and to reinvent. So in dealing with uncertainty, I’m always accepting the fact that I don’t know what’s coming. You have to choose things that are going to be sustaining, things like what kind of nutrition you might have, how much rest you’re going to get, what medication you’re going to take.

The thing about an MS diagnosis is, it can feel like your choices have been limited. The fact is you have more choices to make when you have MS, but there’s no limit to the possibilities of how your life might go. My name is Todd Cerveris, and I’m a member of MyMSTeam.

Since being diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) in 2004, Todd hasn’t let his diagnosis take over every aspect of his life. He enjoys creative pursuits, family time, his career, long-distance cycling, and engaging with friends. “MS doesn’t define who I am,” he said.

Todd is careful to stay on top of disease management every day to keep symptom flares at bay. Nearly 20 years after his initial MS diagnosis, Todd continues to find new and improved ways to navigate the disease. “You learn how to manage your condition, both physically and mentally, so you can live your life on your terms,” he said.
