If I flex my leg, feet,or hands I get a cramp. I wake up at night occasionally with severe cramps in my legs and feet. Has anyone experienced this and have any suggestions?
Take Magnesium. Itake 250 mgs. I was surprised when my doctor told me she wouldn't give me a script for relaxers because this would work... and it did! She is such a smartie :)
Quinine (Tonic) Water helps with cramping after you drink enough of it. Otherwise ask your doctor for Baclofen: Baclofen is used for treating spasm of skeletal muscles, muscle clonus, rigidity, and pain caused by disorders such as multiple sclerosis. It is also injected into the spinal cord (intrathecal) for management of severe spasticity.
Please note too much Baclofen can cause muscle weakness.
I had them severely, in fact I was near permanent pronation of the right arm and my hands and feet were curled and nearly turning blue and purple, now no one can tell the difference. My pain and rehab doctor with my neurologist put me on a Medtronic Baclofen infusion pump, not only are my tremors better but my muscles have relaxed and I have use now of my hands to a degree. I am no longer locked in position or no longer lock at night in one place. I am flexible and can wear shoes and sandles. The effect did not become permanent. This is what a proactive approach does. Between the doctors, good decisions, the right dose and lots of massages and therapy I can look well and be more productive. The cramps were terrible and though I still get some, they no longer are so terrible that they wake me and keep me up. My bones don't feel like compression vices and I don't feel like stone in the mornings waiting for each portion of my body to wake. I am more independent. @babybird, I like how you say oiled as I felt like a rusted oil tin man and now I move more freely.
All this to say, talk to your doc. The right solution is out there to help those joints and muscles. I ache, I won't lead you on, but I can move and do things. If I had waited I would have lost entire use of my arm. I am so grateful for the options that are actually available, but you must ask and be proactive in your care. No matter what it is, just speak up. You are not whining, you are stating fact and you deserve the right to a full and wonderful life. There is a solution, allow the professionals to help. MS is not a DIY fix, though there are many things we can do to help ourselves stay better and healthy, this symptom is more serious and needs bigger attention than anyone is capable of answering on line. I'm sure you will get a good solution that will help you in many ways and make a list when you go, address all that concerns you, your doc will see that you are taking charge and he or she will follow lead and help in your management.
I hope you feel better and be well to enjoy this wonderful life fuly. The best to you and many hugs!
Has your labs been checked lately. My legs cramp more when my potassium is low.....
I drink a bottle of water before bed, magnesium every day. That has helped a lot, reduced the number of spasms. Working on stretching to improve the muscle when possible.
