Thank you for the links. It's good to be an informed consumer and patient. The best way to get proper nutrition is to eat plenty fresh whole foods. There are also many nutrition books out there written by physicians, and every year there is more evidence that gets thrown into the mix. I find it interesting that a lot of the literature on M.S. recommends a lot of the same nutrition that diet doctors have been saying for years. There is some variation regarding vegetarian vs. non-vegetarian diets and what is best. I recommend two books by doctors who also have M.S.:
Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis by Dr. George Jelinek
Minding Your Mitochondria by Dr. Terry Wahls
Two doctors who are proponents of vegetarianism are Dean Ornish and John McDougall. They also have some great vegetarian recipes in the cookbooks they have published.
Being an omnivore with vegetarian tendencies, when I read up on nutrition, I enjoy reading literature that falls into line with my beliefs. That's what doctors and scientists do as well, and they will find evidence to back up what they believe. A lot more money and faith has been given to big pharma, and that is where my skepticism lies.
Thank you immisceo for your opinion. I would like to believe you since it would save me a lot of money on supplements! I believe that what we put (or don't put) into our bodies makes a big difference on health. I asked the question because I don't agree with the overgeneralization that anything that boosts your immune system is bad for MS. When my neurologist told me that, it made me lose respect for her. Vitamin C is one of the vitamins I continue to take. I will also continue to occasionally eat foods that are known to be good for the immune system like various kinds of mushrooms. Many years before I was diagnosed I noticed that echinacea and St. John's wort really messed with my thinking, so I stopped taking them right away.
Sidenote: I haven't had a cold for approximately 5 years.
I'm wondering because I used to take an immune boosting supplement whenever I felt a cold coming on. That was before my diagnosis. Just wondering about which ingredient was the worst.
Anything that boosts the immune system is NOT good for MS. Please speak with your Neuro before taking.
