My husband is 51 and I am 46. He is vivacious and physical and loves hiking sports and being active. Since my MS has been an issue, I barely have the energy or desire participate because it takes so much out of me. I try sometimes but I pay for it later. I feel like such a burden. I wonder if he feels like i just dont enjoy his company any more. ...which isnt true. I go to the movies, out for dinner etc...but I can only handle being up until about 11 or 12 if I really push it so i try to… read more
One year after I got married at age 29, I was diagnosed with ms. Suddenly, I could not begin to keep up with him, though we both imagined we would bike and hike and travel. My husband was a very active bike rider. He rode in the MS150 for 20 years, assisted in training rides and was a big fundraiser for MS. He also volunteers as a hospital visitor for our church. We have been married for 34 years. No, we won't have that bicycle tour through French wine country, but I do intend to have a 50th wedding anniversary mass where we got married in the Ozarks.

I can totally relate. What helped us the most? Reading 29 Gifts together. It's an autobiography (very short quick read) written by a woman who is diagnosed with MS shortly after her wedding. It's her story about her and her husband as they learn more and find ways to make life great again. My whole family read it and it was really moving, inspiring, comforting.....
The other thing that has helped is learning how to say no to things I really don't want to do so that I have enough energy to do the things I do really want to do. This means I've slowly slimmed down my friends list - funny thing is, I don't miss anyone that isn't really around anymore....I have a smaller network but much stronger. And this network understands my challenges and is responding in a really supportive way.
Finally, finding ways to manage and minimize my symptoms has helped tremendously. I spent 2017 completely focused on health and I feel so much better now! There are ways to manage our symptoms - the challenge is finding the ones that work for you since this disease manifests itself in unique ways in each of us. I've taken some great health classes at stanford that really helped - I'm happy to share that and any other info if it would be helpful! Hang in there! If you are like me, my partner isn't annoyed at all even when I think he must be. We are our hardest critics. XX
My husband is active too, me not so much anymore. He bikes a lot and I used to walk 3 miles,a day. I use a cane now and have no balance. I can't walk, makes me mad. What can I Do? Talk to your partner!
Can you rent an ATV to use alongside him when he hikes? Or have hiking parties? Friends & him hike ... whereas you (& other friends who do not want to hike a long ways) either take a short hike to a picnic area or meet them for a picnic where their hike ends?
I think you need to talk to your neurologist about the fatigue.
I also think you need to honestly talk to your husband. Express your concerns. He more than likely will surprise you. Tell him you still want him to enjoy himself but you guys need to find a new thing to do together for couple time. My aunt has fibromyalgia & is married to an outdoorsy man. So they compromised. They now go in their RV and he goes out hunting while she relaxes in the RV. Ignoring the problem will not solve it. Even if you push yourself through it, chances are you will be cranky from over doing it. Honest communication with your life partner is needed.
I can relate to your frustrations. We have always been a very active family as well. I too feel like such a burden but I some back in and do a fact check. I know for a fact my husband loves and wants me and doesn't see me as a burden at all. Usually when I some back into reality instead of my MS brain it helps. I too push thru activities because I don't want to miss outout on living life with the ones I love. Usually the day after or that evening a good soak in a detox bath with epsom salts helps! Keep trucking along friend! Inhale Confidence, Exhale Doubt! God has a purpose for you!
