Sometimes I have to swallow several times to get a small bite down and even have to wash it down with liquid. Makes me wander if my muscles are working right in that area.

Members responded with strong recognition to the question about swallowing difficulties and MS, with many confirming it is indeed a known symptom that affects them regularly. Several members shared helpful strategies including sipping hot peppermint tea, keeping water nearby at all meals, eating slowly, and working with a speech therapist who can offer practical techniques. A recurring theme was the emotional weight of this symptom, including panic, embarrassment, and frustration, along with encouragement to speak with a doctor and know that others in the community truly understand.

Yes, for sure based on the number of comments I have seen on various MS related message boards and personal experience. It helps a ton that this can happen so you can prepare to minimize this from happening. I'll admit, it still happens to me a lot more than I'd like but now I know why

I've just realised what the problem may be, and how to explain it easily....the muscles in our throats are not getting proper signals from nerves in our brains...swallowing is an innate relex from birth...we shouldn't have to think about a swallow...we should do it automatically....every action our bodies perform is controlled by an electrical signal ...the nerve!....therefore ...if the nerve is damaged, that specific function is impaired....that's why our MS is so individualistic....my nerve may be damaged towards the end, another person's all the way along....

Am I on the right track here peeps ?

Difficulty swallowing is definitely a MS thing. I just read an article about it on the MS society web.

I've had this problem on and off for about 10 years. the speech therapist has been helpful, but the panic involved is harder to overcome. I get really frustrated when the brain is saying to swallow, but the throat isn't getting the message. After lung cancer surgery a few years ago (no never smoked) the swallowing problem lasted daily for four months. Wish you luck and see if you can get a referral or appointment with the speech folks, they have some amazing tricks to help out.
