I've been having maybe urinary retention for the last few weeks. Waking first am pee is light flow & bladder doesn’t feel empty afterwards, can press on it & it still feels like I have to go, then I will have to soon go again. Sometimes feel like I have to squeeze bladder/ab muscles & strain to go. Feeling lower ab discomfort & sometimes bladder pain. Sometimes I will go & then have to go again 5 minutes later. Over the past year I’ve been tested for utii several times due to similar symptoms &… read more

I have to catheratize myself. It took me to urologist to find out this is why I kept my uti. I wasn't empting my bladder. Maybe get a second opinion.
@A MyMSTeam Member I was diagnosed in 2005, so I did a lot of research on MS. That might be how I found out about "double voiding." Or it probably was from the urologist that I had to see and receive medication from. But I can't remember. In the beginning of my MS I also had the urgency with the retention. I also had the urgency in combination with not being able to go anyway! I have learned that constipation also interferes with being able to go. Constipation also can give you the feeling that you need to urinate, when you really need a bowel movement, but because of constipation, can't do either one. I have constant constipation that I treat mostly with diet. In the beginning I also had incontinence of both urinary and bowels.
I do the multiple voiding whenever my bladder still feels full. Also, to help with going, it is really good to be sure you are relaxed and that you allow the urinary muscles to be fully relaxed.
@A MyMSTeam Member Thank you! Who taught you about the double voidingetc? I went to urogynocologist, gave him a urine output diary & a journal of all of my symptoms. I had taken uti antibiotic I had on hand before seeing him because all was shut down for the hurricane & my appointment with him was canceled & I started going several times per night. I think he’s convinced I’m just taking in too much fluid. Hope he’s the right guy for me. He said it could be my ms. Now he has me doing a diary of fluid intake, it’s been about a week & the multi night waking with retention pees started back up 2 nights ago & have had urgency then can’t go at all sometimes-Not sure if I had that before he cathed me, which I practically had to beg him to do. I can’t remember the amount but I had like 50mcg? post residual void, he said it wasn’t significant for my age. I’ve had frequent urination since my 20s, thought I had utis all last year, mostly due to worse frequency with some hesitation stuff, but have never had symptoms like this. He seemed very unconcerned... just an FYI, I might copy & paste this out to all. Take care
I have urinary retension also, but it has improved greatly. Here are some things I think helped me:
- I drank MORE water, so that there would be more to go when I needed to go.
- I do "Double (Triple, or more) Voiding."
"Double Voiding" is going what you can, then sit and relax until you go some more.
I repeat this until my bladder feels relieved enough.
It helps to bring or keep something to read with you when you go.
And the most important thing to do is to let your "going" muscles be RELAXED.
