Hi there. I am about to ask my doctor to help me apply for disability (my office brought me in for a review last Friday and it did not go well--and it all goes back to my MS). Has anyone ever done this? I would love to have some advice. My major issues are cognitive ones and fatigue. If you are currently on disability, are you on it because of cognitive issues/fatigue? What did you have to do to get approval for disability? I am very worried about all of this. I meet with my doctor on Feb. 21… read more

@A MyMSTeam Member; good advice; I called a lawyer and that's what they specialize in; I filed in febuary 2013 and got an approval in September, they paid me back to June, it was a blessing, we had been using my 401 k to live on and pay all the medical bills! have a great and pain free week!

I'm on disability it took me about 15 months to get it though so don't get discouraged I didn't have a lawyer and I wish I would have I think it would have gone a little faster. My wife finally called our congress man and he got the ball rolling after that. I will be praying for you that you can get it done very fast. God Bless😀

I'm currently on disability. Find out if there a real human to speak to who is with SSDI. Lawyers are helpful to say the least, but if you enter into a contract with one then he or she will get a % of your earnings. Often there are disability associations that can guide you through the application process. See what available in your area and call. They should be non-profits.

Best to you.

I am on disability, but it’s physical. Not cognitive. I got examined but wasn’t a one shot deal I tried at 22 but was denied. I got approved at 23 sadly I wanted to keep working, which I do but from home . After now that I have lemtrada I want to return to a regular job.

First @A MyMSTeam Member you can do this, your not the first 1, take a deep breath and try not to worry (It doesn't help). See if your company offers any disability to its employees as you probably qualify. Ask your neuro to help you complete the start of your SSDI application (no, it's not that easy) and ask there for a good lawyer with disability law experience to help with the SSDI paperwork. Don't worry, you won't be required to pay associated legal bills upfront. Your legal fees will be paid from your first SSDI payment and it will be taken care of by the government. (you don't need to do anything) You can apply for SSDI by yourself but I choose not to. Your lawyer may ask you to see a couple of other doctors but these will be used to boost your application. Talk to your HR department and tell them your plans and your fear about getting fired. Being upfront with HR is a good idea and should be helpful but I have no insight to how they will react but I do know no matter what happens YOU WILL BE FINE. Remember, you never asked for MS. The application process takes some time but you can do it!!
