I don’t get mad at the celebrity, I love them being open about it and trying to raise awareness, its the fact that the rest of society acts like its some new, unheard of disease that they will do a lot of research on and funnel all kinds of money to. They all get excited to do all this work for it like how they support things like cancer, alzheimers, parkinsons, etc., but a month later every sweeps it under the rug like nothing and it falls through the cracks. It just pisses me off to tell the… read more
While I'd never wish this disease on anyone, the more people are educated about it (and especially BY SOMEONE WHO HAS THE DISEASE!), the better IMHO. I was talking with a neurologist I met at an event last week who said that MS really needs a strong spokesperson that people care about because while neurologists care deeply about their patients, many of them are extreme introverts (he believes this to be true much more for neurologists than other branches of medicine) and therefore do not make strong patient advocates. With the new study out earlier this month about the number of folks in the US with MS being over twice what "they" previously thought - maybe that will help create more urgency in research. XX
Illness is private, unless we choose to shout about it. I am proud to have MS, and if I were a celebrity, I would make sure the world knew!
I think a celebrity is a great way to raise awareness. MS is just one of those diseases that are off people's radars unfortunately. Hopefully society will becomes more educated.
I don't get mad either. If someone (celebrity) wants to shed some light on it, I'm all for it. I find it refreshing that society will understand that these conditions can happen to ANYONE. If a celebrity wants to advocate for it then I'll take it, Sadly, society isn't always compassionate and although we live with this every day and it's always on our minds we can't expect society to have it top of their mind.
I don't care, as long as the celebrity is raising awareness and money to find a cure.
