I cannot describe it any better than that. But there are times, laty a lot of time, i start to see little short white lines pass from back to front in my eyes. Is this common for those with ms?
The gif i attach is for a visual of what it is like..again they move from the back of my eye to the front.

Members responded to a question about seeing flashing white lines in their vision, widely recognizing it as a form of Optic Neuritis (ON), a common MS-related symptom. Several members shared their own visual experiences, including cotton ball shapes, shiny confetti-like flickers, and light streaks, while also noting that one member's similar experience turned out to be a retinal detachment. A recurring theme was the importance of seeing a neurologist or neuro-ophthalmologist to get these visual changes properly checked out.

Wouldn't hurt to see a eye dr about that. It could be something not related to MS but have it checked out...

Optic Neuritis (ON) can take many, many forms. In my first attack in the late '80s my main ON symptom was what looked like bunches of cotton balls entering my field of vision. These were white/grayish-white and would start at the edge and would "grow." For about a week I was blind only seeing that white/grayish-white -- and then it cleared up.

For more than a decade hot weather or raising my body temperature would bring back those "cotton balls." I became sensitized and would sometimes ignore minor amounts if I was working out. (I never claimed to be the brightest bulb in the box!) Getting older I became less sensitive to heat and had fewer ON issues.

I would also (and still sometimes do) get bouts of what I'll call "shiny confetti." It's like someone threw a big handful of aluminum foil confetti in front of you. They twinkle across your field of vision and disappear in a few seconds.

Another MSer I talked to told me she saw that shiny confetti and it was really alien beings from another dimension trying to break into our dimension and we should think welcoming thoughts and they might join us.

I put that into the same category as people who say the "white light" is really god calling us home. Nope, that's just our optical nervous system breaking down -- no god or inter-dimensional beings involved. :)

In the past couple of years I've had what I'll call "dark fireworks." This occurs when I'm stressed, dog-tired, or ill with something else (anything from a cold to other MS symptoms flaring). At night when I'm lying down in bed waiting to fall asleep with my eyes closed, in that "black field" I'll get what looks surprisingly like bursts of fireworks -- only the "fireworks" are black, either slightly lighter or darker than the black field background.

Like real fireworks, these MS "dark fireworks" only appear for a second or two. Opening my eyes ends the phenomenon and I see normally. And oddly, if I shift/move to try to sleep at a 45-or so degree angle, the fireworks end.

When those first started they were startling! I didn't like the "dark" nature/color -- seemed ominous to me. :) Now that those have gone on for a year or two they're no big deal.

I've also had problems with ON losing my stereoscopic vision but fortunately that's been an intermittent, short-term thing. Ditto for me having problems and "slowness" for the brain to "absorb" (process) a visual picture/field/image.

Talking to other MSers, I've been told about all sorts of radical things -- wild colors, hallucination-type appearances. paisley-type patterns. Truly bizarre stuff.

My advice to people with ON: Eat lots and lots of greens, and other veggies/foods that are high in vitamin A.

Sounds like optic neuritus. Sometimes if I cough too hard I can see bright little lights. That could be cells becoming less oxygenated temporarily because of the exhalation.

I've had streaks of light moving down from up in my eyes and that ended up being a retinal detachment. Only an ophthalmologist can have a look to advise you.

Best,

Danny 😎

@A MyMSTeam Member, Our body, including our eyes have nerves communicating with muscles. MS can disrupt that nerve communication with a variety of symptoms. I would suggest that you discuss this with your Neurologist and a possible referral to a Ophthalmologist.

The Very Best To You!
