Members deeply connected over the conversation about losing confidence and avoiding social situations due to memory loss, with many sharing their own struggles with forgetting what they told someone, repeating themselves, losing words mid-sentence, and feeling embarrassed or judged by others who don't understand MS-related cognitive challenges. Several members shared practical strategies including carrying a notebook, doing daily brain exercises like crosswords or Wordle, explaining their memory challenges upfront, laughing off forgetfulness, seeing a counselor, lowering doses of Gabapentin (which can worsen memory), and using techniques like name association or introducing the issue first to reduce stress. A recurring theme was the importance of extending grace to oneself, seeking out true friends and family who understand, not letting fear of judgment prevent social engagement, and recognizing that MS-related cognitive fog is fundamentally different from normal forgetfulness and deserves compassion rather than shame.

99.9% of the populace are respectful of my disability and frequently ask if I need any assistance. Most times I politely decline and say I need to do things myself, as once I CAN’T do it anymore, I will need the assistance!

Yes the memory loss and losing train of thought or get lost in finding the words I want to say when talking is very frustrating! As I’m telling something to someone I have it straight in my head but as I say it I forget to say part of it and I don’t realize it until later sometimes when the subject comes up again and I say it all and right that time and the person says that’s not what I said before. I’m always very nervous talking to new people because I can’t always say things right and I’m afraid of sounding stupid or not making sense. Whenever I see new doctors or people I always mention that I have MS and that I have troubles with talking and explaining things. When my brain acts up like that I call that MS brain. It’s much easier putting a term to it so I tell people I have MS and when I’m at a loss for a word or have trouble explaining something I always say that’s my MS brain. People seem to get it. I came up with that from my aunt. She had cancer and the chemo did the same thing to her and she referred to it as chemo brain which is actually a term. I don’t know if MS brain is a term or not…I only hear of and see brain fog but it seems like people don’t really get that but they seem to get what I mean when I say MS brain

I figure, it is the way it is and it won't change. People can take or leave me because of it. My life won't crumble and I think it's their loss anyway. I'm a good person and friend. 😇
