I was not going to pose this question (out of fear of a 'bad news' answer) . But is there anyone here that has leg muscle atrophy? My left calf has atrophied ( my left side is my ms side) and now my upper left thigh is wasting. I am terrified that I have ALS. My neuro has assured me that I do NOT HAVE ALS. But yesterday he ordered a MRI of the brain. Can MS cause leg muscle wastage? I have not lost strength in left leg but I have had chronic foot drop for the past 5 years (wears an AFO).

Leg muscle atrophy in multiple sclerosis (MS) can occur due to a lack of muscle use. When muscles are not used regularly, they begin to shrink, a process known as atrophy. This can lead to leg weakness, making it harder to walk and maintain balance. Engaging in an exercise program, possibly with the help of a physical therapist, can help strengthen weak leg muscles and improve overall mobility and balance.

Key Points:
- Cause: Lack of muscle use leading to atrophy.
- Impact: Difficulty walking, maintaining balance, and increased risk of falls.
- Management: Exercise programs and physical therapy to strengthen muscles.

I think it's common due to not being able to fully use your muscles. Every time I have a neuro appointment he measures my calves circumference and my upper arms. And my left leg was smaller.share your concerns with your MS specialist. If you don't have faith in your specialist find a new one. You have enough on your plate to then have to worry about ALS. You need a good line of communication with your Healthcare team. Including your PCP. Good luck, I'll pray for u and hope to hear that you're MRI shows you that you don't have ALS!!🙏🏻
