I started having trouble swallowing today. I was choking on the juice from the tangerines, and I couldn't seem to swallow my dinner without effort. It's the first time this has happened and it really scared me. I double fisted some gabapentin and ibuprofen and it seems to be subsiding a bit, but what the heck? How do you handle this?

Members rallied around the frightening experience of trouble swallowing, sharing that getting a referral to a speech therapist for a barium swallow test is one of the most important steps to take. Several members described practical tips like tilting the head forward while swallowing, using thicker liquids like milk instead of water, eating slowly, and staying upright during meals. A recurring theme was the urgency of contacting a neurologist quickly, since aspiration can lead to pneumonia, alongside warm reassurance that this challenge is manageable with the right support.

I try to remember to sit forward and have moisture drink when I am trying to eat or some moisture to add to food if it is too dry

I had to have my esophagus strecthed after having an endoscopy to see why I was having trouble swallowing. I have not had a problem since then .I learned to manage my acid reflux by reading a book called Acid Reflux for dummies. I learned what my triggers are take digestive enzymes and my bed is elevated so it slopes.I am a side sleeper so I strive to sleep om my left side which is the way the stomach digestive flow goes and I try to eat early usually before 630 and if hungry later a light snack. It took me about 6 months to master this habit it works but you have to stick with it.

I had my first-ever GERD episode last weekend, but choking on water when swallowing meds is the pits! I agree that using a straw tends to help.

Although we are not led to believe so? Doctors are human, just like the rest of us. Yes, they are extravagantly educated, but science is continually revising itself. I trust my doctors, but do not view them as “M-Deities”. The human body is extremely complex., (My ex-future husband is Director of a Critical Care department and teaches medical school.) Bottom line? Don’t be afraid to utilize chiropractic, nutrition or other adjunctive therapies (even if your M.D. disregards them). However? Please do your research beforehand.
