To verify a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), a neurologist will typically follow a comprehensive process that includes:
- Medical History: Detailed questions about your symptoms, family medical history, birthplace, and possible exposures to toxins or infections.
- Neurological Examination: Tests for nerve damage, including eye and reflex exams, movement tests, and sensation tests using a tuning fork or other items.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to detect lesions in the central nervous system.
- Blood Tests: To rule out other conditions that mimic MS.
- Evoked Potential Tests: Measures the time it takes for electrical signals to travel from your eyes, skin, and ears to your brain.
- Lumbar Puncture (Spinal Tap): Tests cerebrospinal fluid for antibodies indicating immune system activity.
These steps help ensure an accurate diagnosis by ruling out other conditions and confirming MS-specific criteria.
