Research has shown that these taste changes may be related to MS brain lesions. In fact, studies have found that people with MS can have difficulty identifying different tastes, with salty and sweet flavors being particularly challenging to detect. There are some helpful strategies you can try to enhance your tasting abilities:
- Explore foods with different textures and strong spices
- Take time to smell your food before eating
- Chew slowly and move food around different parts of your tongue
- Consult with your doctor or a registered dietitian for menu planning tips
If you notice sudden changes in taste or smell, it's important to discuss this with your healthcare provider as it could signal an MS flare. This is especially important if you're experiencing unintended weight loss or loss of appetite.
