Is cushiony suede.

Yes, it is! I am a Civil War reenactor and own one. That clasp would be attached to women's chatellaine attached to her waist to carry sewing supplies when she went visiting. The cushioned top is for pins and needles. If it has a hinge, the inside would be for the needles and the cushion for the pins. Hope that helps!

Shannon can you stick a needle in it, if so it’s a pin cushion, and a beautiful one at that 😍 I have a bunch of old ones I kept from my mom, and grandma. My grandma even had the antique Singer sewing machine
