Yes, numbness in the tongue and burning sensations are common symptoms experienced by people with MS. These sensations occur because MS affects the central nervous system, particularly when lesions develop in areas that control sensation in the face and mouth.

Many MyMSTeam members report experiencing similar symptoms, including numbness in their tongue, lips, and gums, as well as tingling or burning sensations in various parts of their face. These symptoms can be particularly noticeable when:
• Talking or eating
• During MS flares
• When experiencing facial numbness (which affects 2.9-13.6% of people with MS)
• When lesions affect the trigeminal nerve, which controls facial sensation

While these symptoms can be concerning, they often improve or resolve at the end of a flare. If symptoms are severe or persistent, speaking with your healthcare provider about treatment options, including corticosteroids, may be helpful.
