My husband has multiple sclerosis. He has been on Avonex for some time, but he still struggles with weakness and stiffness in his left leg — it feels heavy like wood — and sometimes he has pain in his left arm. While weakness can be a side effect of Avonex and other DMTs, it's important that your husband discusses stopping medication with his healthcare provider first. DMTs help reduce MS flare-ups, make them less severe, prevent new nervous system damage, and slow disability progression over time. The weakness he's experiencing could be related to MS itself rather than medication side effects. Many MyMSTeam members have found success working with physical therapy to manage leg weakness and improve balance. Exercise and movement, when properly modified, remain important even with muscle weakness. One member shared that using a rollator (walker with wheels and brakes) helped them stay mobile and actually build strength - "the more I walk with it, the stronger I get."

Some helpful approaches include:
• Working with a physical therapist to learn proper exercises
• Using assistive devices like a rollator for safety and mobility
• Maintaining regular movement within his abilities
• Having his medication dosage reviewed by his doctor to minimize side effects while maintaining benefits

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Denise. I really appreciate your honesty and the insight into living with MS for so many years. My husband has been struggling with weakness and stiffness in his left leg for a long time, and he’s also worried about side effects from Avonex. It’s reassuring to hear about your journey and your advice to research and decide with our doctor. I hope you continue to stay well, and your words give me hope as we look for the best options for him. 💙
