Are you experiencing persistent coughing, choking on food, and burning mouth syndrome since having COVID-19?

Many MyMSTeam members report similar challenges with coughing and choking. These symptoms can be related to MS in several ways:

Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) affect about one-third of people with MS. This happens when MS lesions in the brain stem interfere with nerve signals to the tongue and throat muscles, making them weak and uncoordinated.

Common experiences include:
- Choking or coughing when eating or drinking
- Feeling like food is stuck in your throat
- Needing to constantly clear your throat
- Difficulty controlling saliva

One MyMSTeam member shared: "I was eating an apple, and the juice had me choking. I just kept coughing and coughing."

Long COVID can also contribute to ongoing symptoms in people with MS, including new or worsened fatigue, respiratory symptoms, and gastrointestinal effects that may persist for months.

It's important to talk with your neurologist about these symptoms. Swallowing problems can lead to serious complications like aspiration pneumonia (when food or liquid enters your airways). Your doctor may recommend:
- A swallowing assessment
- Speech therapy
- Dietary modifications
- Exercises to strengthen throat muscles

Don't wait to address this - early intervention can help manage these symptoms and prevent complications.

I never had COVID but for 20 years I have had burning mouth issues and dry mouth and swallowing issues and GERD. I use special mouth wash amd switched meds that cause dry mouth
(That did not help..they all do it) and saw a speech therapist and nutricianist to learn how to cope with swallowing issues. I adapted my diet to soft food and added protein shakes.

"Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) affect about one-third of people with MS. " WOW!! ANOTHER frequent MS symptom that I didn't know about because I've never experienced it.
