Yes, insomnia is very common among people with MS. Research shows that about 60 percent of people with MS experience sleep problems, with insomnia being one of the most frequently reported issues.

A MyMSTeam member shared, "I had total insomnia for the second night in a row, plus a migraine. Does anyone else get insomnia directly from MS or relapses?" Another member wrote, "I haven't slept in two days. I'm exhausted."

Insomnia in MS can stem from several factors:
* MS-related symptoms like muscle spasms and neuropathic pain
* Neurological changes from MS lesions in the brain or spinal cord
* Frequent nighttime urination (nocturia)
* Side effects from MS medications
* Vitamin D deficiency

The challenging part is that lack of sleep can make other MS symptoms worse, creating a difficult cycle to break. The good news is that there are strategies that can help improve sleep. Consider trying:
* Following a relaxing bedtime ritual
* Keeping a regular sleep schedule
* Limiting alcohol and caffeine
* Managing stress and mood issues
* Addressing bladder problems if you're waking frequently to urinate

If you're struggling with insomnia, let your doctor know. Standard treatments for sleep disorders can improve fatigue and other symptoms in people with MS. Your healthcare provider can work with you to identify what's causing your sleep issues and develop a personalized plan to help you get better rest.
