Can caffeinated coffee cause diarrhea, especially after drinking it for years?
Caffeine can affect your gastrointestinal system and potentially cause digestive issues like upset stomach or cramps. For people with MS, this is particularly important to consider since many already experience bowel dysfunction.
If you've been drinking coffee for years without issues, your body may be accustomed to it. However, excessive caffeine consumption can irritate the digestive system and worsen existing bowel symptoms.
A few things to consider:
- The amount matters - high doses of caffeine are more likely to cause problems
- MS-related bowel dysfunction could make you more sensitive to caffeine's effects
- Changes in your symptoms over time might mean your tolerance has shifted
If you're noticing new digestive issues, it might be worth moderating your coffee intake or switching to a lower-caffeine option to see if symptoms improve. Keeping coffee consumption moderate is generally recommended for people with MS to avoid worsening bladder and bowel symptoms.
