Constipation can be an issue. Ask your doctor if you can take MiraLAX or have some warm water with lemon. You can also gently massage your stomach in a “u” shape to help move things along.

Bowel problems like constipation are common with MS and can happen suddenly. Many people with RRMS experience bowel issues that can be frustrating and uncomfortable. The feeling of needing to go but being unable to is a symptom that MyMSTeam members frequently describe.
MS can affect the nerves that control bowel function, leading to constipation or other digestive issues. Some members find that their bowel problems become more noticeable during flare-ups or on particularly difficult days with their MS symptoms.
Here are some things that might help:
- Stay well hydrated with plenty of water
- Increase fiber in your diet gradually
- Try gentle movement or walking if you're able
- Consider over-the-counter stool softeners (check with your doctor first)
- Keep track of when symptoms occur to identify patterns
If the pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms like vomiting, fever, or inability to pass gas, you should contact your healthcare provider right away. They can rule out other causes and suggest appropriate treatments for your specific situation.
A MyMSTeam member shared experiencing similar issues, noting that bowel problems can feel "constant" and affect energy levels significantly.
