I was in denial after it occurred. A little embarrassed that it happened at my parent's house for dinner with my husband. I when I passed out, I fell out of my chair on the floor. When I recently learned what it could possibly be, I was shocked and scared. I asked my neurologist what happened and I was told I have dyshagia. Maybe, but it just seemed a too easy explanation. Thoughts?

It’s usually caused by a drop in blood pressure. Do you know if that was a possibility for you during that time? Did you eat something that maybe can be a trigger?

It's rare. "Swallow syncope is a relatively rare cause of syncope that belongs to the neurally-mediated reflex syncopal syndromes. It occurs due to a vagal reflex during deglutition causing inhibition of the cardiac conduction system. Since the first reported case of swallow syncope in 1773 by Spens,1 there have been only about 80 case reports of swallow syncope in the literature to date. In most cases there was an underlying abnormality in the esophageal or cardiac conduction system. However, there have been reported cases without any esophageal or cardiac abnormality."

Oh wow! I wonder if that was what I was experiencing. When I would try to go shopping, I would all of a sudden start sweating, became nauseous, saw black spots, stomach pain and felt as if I would pass out. I would just hold on to my basket until it passed. Never figured it out. At the time I didn't know I had MS. Just thought it was menopause or something or I was crazy.

That's interesting. I did read something about a trigger causing a drop in your blood pressure. More research is in order!
