Itching all over — especially when the heat kicks in — is something many people with MS can relate to. The warmth can make nerve-related symptoms flare up, and itching is actually a recognized MS symptom caused by nerve damage rather than a skin problem. So those creams and antihistamines? They likely won't do much, unfortunately.

Here are some things that may help bring relief:

- Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the itchy areas to help numb the sensation
- Take a cool (not ice cold) shower — start lukewarm and gradually lower the temperature
- Drink cold beverages to help cool your body from the inside
- Avoid alcohol, as it can make itching worse
- Wear loose, breathable fabrics and avoid anything tight or made of nylon
- Try to stay in air-conditioned spaces during the hottest parts of the day If the itching becomes really hard to manage or is affecting daily life, it's worth talking to your neurologist. They may consider medications that target nerve-related symptoms, such as gabapentin or certain antidepressants like amitriptyline, which can help with abnormal sensations.

As always, check with your doctor before starting anything new — some of these medications do come with side effects worth discussing.
