Members responded with care and concern to someone experiencing swallowing difficulties, with many sharing that they deal with the same challenge as part of living with MS. Several members recommended seeing a gastroenterologist or neurologist and strongly suggested working with a speech therapist or speech pathologist, noting that therapy can identify issues like a glottic gap and help strengthen the muscles needed for swallowing. Practical tips included using a straw for liquids, taking medications one at a time, chewing food thoroughly, and keeping water nearby to help wash down food and pills.

Swallowing issues are part of MS struggles. Talk to your neurologist and explain what you’re experiencing. I was given swallowing therapy from a speech pathologist which was very helpful. Good luck. πŸ§‘πŸ™πŸ’ͺπŸ™πŸ§‘

Make an appointment with a gastroenterologist. They may be able to do an endoscopy, or a modified barium swallow test
