A spinal tap (also called a lumbar puncture) can feel a little daunting, but knowing what to expect can really help. The whole procedure usually takes around 45 minutes.
Here's a general rundown of what happens:
- You'll lie on your left side with knees pulled to your chest, or sit leaning forward
- A local anesthetic is Show Full Answer
Thank you! I have been nervous about having the spinal tap
When I had it done, they first drew my blood . Then I was told to lie down on a table , they injected the numbing medicine into my back ( lidocaine) then the table you lay on tilts slightly so when they draw the csf from your back gravity helps it come out easier . They will take a few small vials from your back and take a couple of days for the results . You have to lay flat after . I did have a leak ( the puncture didnβt seal properly)but not everyone goes through that. You will be fine !!
Ive had quite afew of these done over the years, and id say I have quite a high pain threshold.
What they will be looking for in the spinal fluid are whats called oligoclonal bands (OCBs), which are specific groups of immune proteins (immunoglobulins) detected when testing cerebrospinal fluid or blood serum. Alot of people with MS have these proteins present.
Back to the procedure, it was alittle painful, more of a stinging pain, I also got a strange sensation in my groin area too, like a pulling feeling. I was also told to lay flat for an hour after the procedure. The first couple of times I did have the worst headache, that being said the last time I had one I didnt have the headache.
As others have mentioned its important to keep well hydrated, keep lay still for a while after the procedure, also get some rest for the following 48 hours or so.
Another idea, maybe try to do some breathing exercises whilst the procedure is being done to eliviate any anxiety, you could also get a fidget squishie toy too, which is supposed to act as a distraction technique.
Good luck you'll do jusy fine π
Do as your doctor says and lay down after the tap. I didn't...terrible headache. Migraine like! Other than that, not a problem. It's how my doctor confirmed my RRMS diagnosis. Wish ya the best.
