Since being on Tysabri these last 8 months, I've had 2 sinus infections and I've had 3 rounds of tonsillitis (July, August, September ). My tonsils get really red, swollen, and covered in white pus (gross, sorry!) I have never had any trouble with sinuses or tonsils ever. My neurologist agreed that the Tysabri is likely compromising my immune system. My Tysabri is working for my MS, so I don't want to go off of it. I'm considering a tonsillectomy to help reduce the problems I'm having.
Yes I was told that Tysabri "alters" the immune system as I have been on it for 4 years and have recurring infections. I take a probiotic and notice a difference when I skip a few days...not sure if it's really helping, but willing to try something natural
NolaMS sends to have some interesting information worth checking into. Regarding you're tonsils though, I had tonsillitis as an adult (I think before diagnosis) and was curious why my doc chose antibiotics instead of surgery. Don't get me wrong, I was thrilled, I just had thought surgery was the only option. It was explained to me that with the immune benefits of our tonsils, tonsilectomies (sp?) are only performed when absolutely necessary. I don't know anything about Tsyabri specifically, but if you suspect it is weakening your immune system and surgery it's an option, it is probably worth asking a doctor if getting you tonsils out and further weakening your immune system would make the problem better or rush making it worse.
I had frequent UTI while on Tysabri. When I started taking it every 5 weeks they stopped for months. It's now being said that Tysabri does not have to be taken every 28 days. Some docs will go six weeks. They are now looking at going out up
To 8 weeks. So, b4 I had surgery as an adult, I would tell neuro the Tysabri has my immune system down so let's spread out the infusions 6 weeks.
