Just curious if anyone is using a special diet for their MS such as Swank, Paleo, or whatever. Interested in if youve had any success with it as far as symptom control and MS progression.
I haven't tried any of those particular diets. I take Vitamin D tablet every morning. I have changed my eating habits. I eat less fried foods. I eat broiled , baked, or oven roasted foods. I drink green tea, water and milk ( not that 2% stuff). Cut out drinking too much soda pop. Eat spinach in place of lettuce in my salads and on sandwiches, and I eat more vegetables. I have lost weight, experience less pain, walk more and longer distances without using my cane as often as I us to. I even sleep better. I have made a 180 degree improvement in how MS affects me. I still have So/So days and Bad days but not as many as I use to.
I have not tried a special diet but I have started walking more. I also cut back on carbs and sugars.
That's a great question, I have also heard that is better to eat healthy for MS patient, it's really hard to stay on healthy diet with kids around but couple of things that I do really helped,
1. Eat first twice a week.
2. Drink milk with tumeric powder which is anti inflammatory everyday.
3. Try to do deep breathing exercises.
4. Drink vegetables fruits smoothies
Plz also let me know other easy ways to eat healthy😊
Hi,
I'm really new to this & fairly new to MS (diagnosed in Jan this year) - I've found changing my diet really helped - practically saved me. I had pain in my hand and arm and it very quickly spread all down my right hand side & into both of my legs - i was struggling to walk. February was the worst month of my life.
My Neurologist was fairly dismissive about the role diet would play in treating MS but, I found a video online (google 'Terry Wahl’s ted talk') so I bought her book. She likes to use her own name a lot but she does make a lot of sense & it’s really helped me.
She believes that auto-immune diseases are cause but a lack of vitamin & minerals in our diet (mainly from eating too much processed & packaged foods in the west) she recommends excluding gluten & diary. Which in not easy gluten especially is in just about everything! It’s really worked for me – I still have pain in my arm but the rest of me is back to ‘normal’.
It’s still early days for me – and the nature of RRMS is I don’t know if this is a permeant fix but I’m sure it’s really helped me. I can’t recommend it highly enough try it!!! Especially going gluten free – since being gluten free I’ve had it twice by accident & both times my MS symptoms were worse in the days after. Dairy not so much – I’ve had dairy a couple of times and my MS hasn’t gotten worse but it got spots!
Hope this helps.

I found some of the MS type diets conflicting (best bet, OMS, Wahls etc.. and even Anti-inflammatory). Some allow legumes, others do not, some don't worry about saturated fat etc... however I saw a naturopath after my diagnosis, and removed the most known things to cause inflammation (Gluten, Dairy, Sugar). I also focused on very low saturated fat (swank). I have lean fish and lean meats (chicken and turkey), limit legumes, eggs, grains and focus on mostly plant based diet (low fat vegan recipes, then adding lean meat or fish) - look at Forks over Knives. Probably very similar to Mediterranean diet which was also recommended by my Neuro. I was diagnosed after optic neuritis in June 2016, started meds last month, no exacerbations and my fatigue improved, as well as losing 35lbs. I don't have much of a history to contribute as to how diet has helped MS so far but I do believe eating clean, avoiding foods that promote inflammation, and keeping yourself healthy is important.
